Ok, first of all, you can blame Adelisa Salernitana for this Blog. She and I go WAAAAY back to the very early aughts for when we began in the SCA. Needless to say – I have seen her and her work in the Arts & Sciences over many years, and I was delighted to know that she was being elevated to the Order of the Laurel.
Her Laurel reached out to me and asked me to make a Mantle. Knowing that Adelisa’s personna is Norman-Sicilian, I did some research and discovered that King Roger I had an incredible mantle for his coronation. The shape was the inspiration for Adelisa’s.

I created Adelisa’s manle from silk noil lined with linen, and sari silk for the laurel wreath.

Now, on to the garb. Adelisa had a STUH-NING piece of silk from Sartour that she wanted to use for the overdress. It was quite glorious. Having to cut this fabric was as sensation that I can only describe as “Barfy”, because if there had been a mistake – it couldn’t be undone. Thankfully, all went well and there was no regurgitation. The underdress was a silk taffeta. Unfortunately I did not have time to hand finish seams.
